The main purpose of this blog is to give myself a space to document my geocaching exploits. I might throw in some educational stuff, too.

Olive Branch - June 5, 2009
I went to Olive Branch, MS to get my car's oil changed. I figured while I was there I would pick up a few easy caches. The caches weren't too bad, but once again, I got hosed by using my GPSr autorouting instead of planning out a good route ahead of time. I think I found 5 in Olive Branch and a couple more on the way home. I saved a few for the next time I get my oil changed.

U of M Vegetable Gardens?
This turned out to be a perfect day for caching, if you like it warm. I couldn't take a trip today because I had errands to run, but I could pick up few caches on the way. My main goal for the morning was to run my car through inspection. Fun. On my way to the inspection station, my first stop was the University of Memphis to pick up Graduation by Jamie Z (GC1R3VE). I parked in the north lot and walked about 500 feet to the location of the cache. It blended in really well to its hiding spot and I ended up having to think "three-dimensionally" to find it. After extracting the ammo can (Yes an urban ammo can!), a university golf-cart pulled up and parked nearby. I thought it might be campus security and I calmly went about my business as the man walked past me to head into one of the nearby buildings.
After replacing the cache, I decided that since I was already here I would check out the newly planted University vegetable gardens near the Field House. When I got to the location, I ran into two of the organizers of the project. I talked to one (Randy), while the other (his wife, Karyl) watered the gardens.

I was (and still am) skeptical of their project, which allows students, faculty, and staff to pick and eat the vegetables (as well as help out with the gardens). Even though the Field House gardens are located next door to Police Services, I predict that the gardens will soon be vandalized by the neighborHOOD residents. The gardens looked really nice, though.
After touring the gardens, it was back to the road for me. I picked up Rescue Me! by resq1ff (GC1BRM1) and Bald Cypress by Chance Encounter (GCW0JA) before heading over to the auto inspection station. Only a 1 hour wait in line...

Geowoodstock VIII
After being only mildly disappointed in not going to Geowoodstock VII, I was pleased to see that the time and location of Geowoodstock VIII has been announced. It just so happens that not only will I be in the vicinity of the event on the specified date, I know people who live nearby!
Suck it, GOWT!

Caching on Mother's Day 2009
Since I live too far away to visit my Mom on this day, I went to spend the afternoon with my brother and his family. I wanted to hunt a few caches on the way, but didn't want to get muddy so I picked up 6 easy ones.
The first two were quick park and grabs: Hot or Mild? by Pixiemama (GC1EM75) and AKA Fred Meyers by FrozenTundraMonkeys (GCW3Y8). The latter of those two was in serious need of repair. Next, I hit Lucky by cgeek (GCY09G), a simple roadside cache in an empty area.
I drove a bit further north and found Famil(y) Park Again!!!! by masmason12 (GC1CVMD) near Lakeland City Hall before heading west for my final two caches of the day.

The first (or 5th) was located in Blue Lagoon Park in north Bartlett. This park is in a developing area and has a lake with a walking trail as well as some soccer fields to the north. To get the cache - Young Brooke Shields in the ___ ___ Movie by RussHolland (GC1JNXY) involved a hike most of the way around the lake. There were muggles near the cache when I started my walk, but they headed off before I got to my destination. The cache area was a little swampy and the coordinates seemed a bit off, but I made the find.
After the hike back to the car, I drove to the opposite end of the street (Blue Lagoon Drive) and found my last cache: m L g w by RussHolland (GC1JVK0) on the perimeter of a MLGW substation.
By this time I was out of caches and it was starting to sprinkle a little bit so I headed off to my brother's house where we had lasagna for dinner.

Nonconnah Greenbelt Park - April 11, 2009
Saturday was a beautiful day for caching and jbgreer and I decided to take advantage of it and hunt the caches in Nonconnah Greenbelt Park. I mapped out 7 caches in the park to do and two warmups for on the way over.
I met jbgreer at his house around 8:30am and we set off. The first cache of the day was Giving Back #3 Here you go Memphis! by jeffbouldin (GC1JVPE). I knew from the cache logs online that this would be an easier find than its rating of 2/5 would suggest. In fact, it turned out to be a walk-up cache - the easiest one of the day... Next, was Heatwave by FamilyInFilm, CodeMission, GirlinFilm, & CoolZX11 (GC155M4). This one had been on my list of to-do's for a while. The solution to the puzzle hit me just a few days after I had been in close proximity to the cache spot. It, too, was an easy find (by design).
Properly warmed up, we headed south to Nonconnah Greenbelt Park. After finding the information for the final stage of Caching A,B,Z's by tinksdad01 (GC1A3WP) near the parking area, we set off in search of more difficult caches. We both brought our rubber boots and they came in handy! Of course it would have worked out better if my boots were about a foot taller...

Hmmmm... the first find of the woods was De-Hydration by tinksdad01 (GC1NQC5). Lack of water was not a problem for this area. If I remember correctly, while hunting this cache, my right leg sunk deeper than the height of my boot.
Its all york by bryboy#1 (GC1M7BM) was our next find. Lots of swamp wading followed by a tough search. The coords were good, but the container was small and well-hidden.
Wild Turkey by Abiectio (GC1MAFY) was a neat hide. We saw plenty of turkey feathers in the area.
After overcoming a might obstacle, we made our way to the next cache: Mirror, mirror by Abiectio (GC1KME9). This was probably my favorite cache of the day! I can't say why, though - it would spoil the surprise.

The Saga of the Frozen Dozen by Abiectio (GC1MAGA) was next. I liked the cache, but the cache page was a pain in the rear to navigate through. Basically a lot of pictures and story about a cache hunt that had nothing to do with this cache.
Penny's Worth Of Trouble by ProntoPup, Hoot Owl, and Tinksdad01 (GC1P01D) was a typical prontopup hide - it was well done. We were having trouble finding it until I read the FTF log on my Palm Pilot. It was also our last find of the day. There is now only one cache unfound by us in this park, and it is a puzzle cache that we haven't solved yet. Spoilers in that cache's online log led me to believe it was in this park.
Somewhere in the above mix, we found the final stage of Caching A,B,Z's by tinksdad01 (GC1A3WP). Biggest/tallest ammo can I think I have seen. We had some problems getting out the letters needed to form our caching names (a requirement of the cache). I had to use a "W" as an "M". When we went to put the container back, jbgreer noticed a small green frog on the side of the can.

The hike back to the truck was considerably easier than the hike in. However, the obstacles we had to overcome were there regardless. All in all it was a fun day!
